Photographer or the Camera – An Age-Old Debate

We all know it’s never a good idea to tell a photographer that his or her job is so easy ANYONE can do it. Unless you want this year’s Thanksgiving family portrait to feature you as the roasted turkey!
And if that were true why would we hire photographers to take our pictures? Why not just buy an expensive camera and do it yourself? Be it for a photo shoot, special galas, your daughter’s sweet sixteen, or your friend’s wedding. Is it because you would rather have someone else taking those pictures so you can enjoy the moment? Or because they already have a better and more expensive camera? In most cases both may be true. However, more often than not you hear people say that if they had a better camera they would take their own pictures and it would be just as good.
Yes, more expensive professional DSLR cameras have more adjustable settings than an entry level DSLR camera that have smaller ISO/exposure (brightness and contrast) and Fstop/depth-of-field (the amount of blurring in the background) ranges; all factors that all contribute to the composition of a great photo. Then why is it that when an amateur photographer purchases a professional level camera and sets everything to auto, the pictures are great, but not quite National Geographic or Newspaper quality? That is because although the equipment gives you the capacity for award winning photographs, a professional photographer knows how to use the settings to capture the moment in the right amount of exposure for a dramatic effect, the right amount of focus to draw attention to a specific spot in the image.
